Feed your Soul - Nourish America's Children
Nourish America feeds hungry children in America

"We at Nourish America are very grateful to be a partner in the "I AM GRATEFUL PROJECT" and for the opportunity to help poor and hungry children in our own country."

Nourish America is committed to provide the daily essential nutrition that impoverished American children, families, pregnant moms, and seniors and others in need require to live productive, successful lives.

We do this by providing them nutrient rich foods and products such as vitamin supplements and nourishing foods (including naturals and organics).Give a Child Nourishment Our distribution network includes thousands of volunteers and staff who work at hundreds of Nourish America partner organizations and agencies serving those in need across all 50 states.

For a country as fortunate as the United States, the hunger here is substantial. In 2006, 35.5 million Americans lived in food insecure households, 22.8 million adults and 12.6 million children Compared to other developed nations throughout the world, those numbers are extremely high. In fact, America has earned the distinction of having the highest level of childhood poverty in all the industrialized nations. Because of the recent downturn in the economy, the numbers of impoverished families are increasing dramatically.

What exactly does hunger and malnourishment look in a child's life here in America?

A hungry, malnourished child's body is severely compromised. She is perpetually sick with colds. Sitting in her classroom, she is not able to focus sufficiently to understand new concepts or retain the information taught that day. So when she attempts to perform well during a test, she can't remember and she can't succeed - even if she has the natural ability to do so! When she goes out on the playground, she doesn't have the stamina or the strength to compete in sports. So she blames herself for being a "loser" in the classroom and on the school ground. Her self-esteem sinks progressively lower.

Because of the generosity of our donors, Nourish America is able to assist tens of thousands of these children in need, breaking the cycle of malnutrition, fatigue and depression by providing them, and their families, with free high-quality nutritional supplements and nourishing foods including naturals and organics. In Nourish America programs, children who were once malnourished and hungry begin to thrive, leading healthier, happier lives.

How? With the addition of essential nutrition, these children's bodies begin to grow and develop as they were meant to develop. Their brains work better and they retain information and perform better on tests earning higher grades. On the playground they run faster and jump higher then they ever did before. Their self-esteem begins to soar. Suddenly, they no longer see themselves as the "losers" they thought they were. Now their lives have promise and hope.

Parents, teachers and staff confirm these improvements year after year in Nourish America's annual observational surveys. Last year, parents reported that over one-half of the children in our programs had higher energy, were more physically active, were sleeping better and were sick less often. Also it was reported that over one-third of the children were happier, had higher grades, better concentration and greater self-esteem.

Michelle, a young Nourish America program participant, is a great example of Nourish America's success. She is a sixth grader living in a poverty stricken public housing project in Washington DC. When asked what Nourish America meant to her, she exclaimed, "Before Nourish America, I never got an 'A'. Now I get all 'A's and I'm going to be a doctor!"

Nutritious foods, supplements and consistent exercise are effective tools to strengthen children and support their development into happy productive adults.
